For Inquiry 1, I plan on doing a close reading on the film The Departed directed by Martin Scorsese with a star-studded cast that includes, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, and Martin Sheen. I chose this film for a myriad of different reasons, for one I love all the actors that were involved in this film, especially DiCaprio. I honestly cannot name a single movie that Leonardo DiCaprio has been in that I haven't absolutely loved. Inception, Titanic, Shutter Island, Django Unchained, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Great Gatsby, and my all-time favorite Blood Diamond, are all phenomenal pieces of film. However the reason I chose this DiCaprio film has to be the man behind the camera, whom DiCaprio often works with, Martin Scorsese. Scorsese is a master director and will go down as one of the best directors throughout history. Scorsese is one of those directors who can create a masterpiece by just being involved.
For the actual close reading of the film, I plan on writing about the theme of Identity that is portrayed in film. You have DiCaprio and Damon each struggling to find out each other's true identities before the other. You have Damon, a mole planted into the Massachusetts PD by the Irish Mob in order to get the upper hand, on the other side you have DiCaprio who is just about to graduate from the Police Academy, but instead is tasked to go undercover in the Irish Mob. The film's premise itself is Oscar-Worthy.
